Pumas senior men won their second league game of the season, with a resounding 41 point victory over affiliate team Aberdeen Aces. Pumas began the game with just 6 players of a squad due to Louis and Michael running late. The game started with both teams taking turns to score, as Pumas set the tone for the game with their patient ball movement. Midway through the first quarter, Michael and Louis arrived, although Michael’s game took until the second quarter to follow suit. An impressive start to the second saw Pumas stretch the lead out, with TJ and Calvin playing strong in the paint on offence, as Mini began to pick apart the defence with some nice drives. The team played with a great balance on both ends of the floor and went into the half 35-18 to the good.
A change in the Aces defence to a man to man press saw them claw back some points as Pumas panicked unnecessarily and turned the ball over. After a brief shaky patch the guards started to find a means of breaking the press and this led to Jamie Leese breaking through on numerous times to dish to the wings and big men. On the defensive end Pumas began to switch off at the back of their zone leading to easy finishes in close for the opposition number 12 who seemed to be the only real outlet at that point for them. In the fourth Pumas showed why they’ve won so many games in the last few season with their experience, which culled any sniff of a comeback. Andrew Fraser made his Pumas debut, coming on in the 4th. He quickly got his name on the scoresheet – albeit for 2 fouls in 30 seconds- getting stuck in at both ends.
The team rotated near the end of the game and Louis Armour showed glimpses of promise with some fine eurosteps, and even a deep three. In the end Pumas came out with an 88-47 victory and can be proud of the ball movement on offence, and game management skills. Next up on Friday is Beacon Tigerz at home.
